ALGORITHMIC OPEN DESIGN
THIS PROJECT EXPLORES ALGORITHMIC DESIGN IN AN OPEN, USER-LED CAPACITY. FOR IT, I DEVELOPED A SERIES OF ALGORITHMS THAT REDESIGN AND RECONSTRUCT TRADITIONAL GARMENT ARCHETYPES BASED ON MOVEMENTS OF THE STARTING ITEM. THESE PROCESSES BREAK DOWN AND OPEN UP THE LOGICS OF THE DESIGN PROCESS IN A WAY THAT REQUIRES REPEATED COLLABORATION BETWEEN DESIGNER, MAKER AND CUSTOMER AND QUESTIONS THE CURRENT SEGMENTED AND LINEAR FASHION SYSTEM. ADDITIONALLY, BY PRESENTING DESIGN IN A RIGID, TECHNICAL WAY THAT IS INTERACTIVE THROUGHOUT AND AS A PROCESS NOT A PRODUCT, IT AIMS TO EXPLORE NEW WAYS TO ENGAGE WITH THE CLOTHES WE OWN AND THE CREATIVITY AND LABOUR BEHIND THEM; AS WELL AS WHO CAN CLAIM OWNERSHIP OF BOTH THE DESIGNS AND FINAL PRODUCTS.
NUMERICAL DATA FOR TO BE INPUT IN THE ALGORITHMS WAS COLLECTED THROUGH MOVEMENT TRACKING A BASE FRAME OF AN EXISTING GARMENT AT VARIOUS POINTS OF USE. THE ALGORITHMS IN THIS PROJECT MORE MATHEMATICAL FUNCTIONS THAT ALTER THE PHYSICAL GARMENTS AND PATTERNS AND NOT COMPUTER CODES.
DATA COLLECTION
THE INITIAL BASE GARMENT AND PATTERN FOR THE BLAZER ALONGSIDE THE OUTCOME FOR BOTH WHEN PUT THROUGH THE DESIGN ALGORITHM. THE ALGORITHM GENERATES THE GARMENT THROUGH DICTATING BOTH THE ALTERED PATTERN AND A NEW ORDER OF MAKE.
BLAZER PROCESS
A BASIC SHIRT PATTERN IS ALTERED BY THE INTERPRETATION OF THE DESIGN ALGORITHM BY ONE DESIGNER. THIS NEW PATTERN INFORMATION IS THEN PASSED ONTO TWO DIFFERENT MAKERS TO FINALISE IN A GARMENT, BOTH ARE SHOWN HERE
SHIRT COLLABORATION PROCESS
THE INITIAL PATTERN FROM THE BASE GARMENT IS COMBINED WITH A NEW VERSION OF THE PATTERN ONCE IT IS PUT THROUGH THE DESIGN ALGORITHM. THE PROCESS OF THE COMBINATION IS DECIDED IN PART BY A SEPARATE ALGORITHM.
TROUSER PROCESS
AN ABSTRACTION OF A BASE GARMENT IS PUT THROUGH AN ALGORITHM TO GENERATE AN ABSTRACT PATTERN. THE ORDER OF MAKE FOR THIS IS DECIDED BY THE COMBINATION ALGORITHM.
TROUSER PROCESS
A TIMELINE OF POTENTIAL ENGAGEMENT POINTS FOR USERS AND POSSIBLE COMBINATIONS OF THE ALGORITHMS IS SHOWN BELOW. TO THE RIGHT IS A SELECTION OF POTENTIAL INTERACTION TIMELINES SHOWING WORK DONE BY THE TRADITIONAL ROLES OF DESIGNER, MAKER AND CUSTOMER WHEN ENGAGING WITH THESE PROCESSES.
